This course is an introduction to those wishing to enhance their understanding of complex project management. It provides a conceptual bridge, complementing and extending traditional analytical tools of senior organisational members, project portfolio directors and project managers into the field of complex project management. It takes participants through the strategic imperatives within complex systems through to organisational and holistic systems approaches, so they can design and manage viable project systems, and solve emerging problems.
The course starts with the real-world issues that have led to adopting a systems thinking approach to complex projects. The context also considers organisational strategy, stakeholder needs, and project delivery architecture.
During the 3-day program we work with a number of cases to bring together the systems methodologies that may be applied to help with the design of the content with an example project delivery methodology. Participants have significant opportunities to consider the transfer of the learning to their own projects.
What will participants get out of this course?
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Make sense of complex problems using soft systems methodology
- Challenge project/problem boundaries and 'taken for granted assumptions using critical systems heuristics
- Use the 'viable system model'
- Understand organisational strategy and strategic alignment
- Implement a complex program.
Participants have significant opportunities to consider the transfer of their new knowledge to their own projects. Feedback for this course shows that the transfer of learning to the workplace is immediate and powerful.
